Grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation will support a more equitable workforce and enterprise ecosystem through the Brooklyn Health Enterprise Hub

Brooklyn, NY (January 20, 2022) – Today, Brooklyn Communities Collaborative (BCC) – a non-profit focused on strengthening health, leadership, and economic mobility in Brooklyn – announced that they have been awarded a $300,000 grant from The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation (MCHF), a private, nonprofit organization committed to improving the health and well-being of New Yorkers.

“We are honored to receive this grant from MCHF – a forward-looking organization that’s committed to bolstering the economic and health outcomes of vulnerable communities in New York,” said Shari Suchoff, BCC Executive Director. “With MCHF’s continued support, the Brooklyn Health Enterprise Hub will train and support economic democracy fellows and affordable housing property managers, and grow Brooklyn businesses through research-driven development opportunities. Each of these efforts will lead to a healthier and more economically sound borough.”

The grant marks the second year in a row MCHF has supported BCC. In 2021, MCHF’s grant was critical to launching BCC’s Brooklyn Health Enterprise Hub – a borough-wide enterprise initiative dedicated to addressing weaknesses in Brooklyn’s health care supply chain and workforce. Specifically, The Hub was created to help hospitals localize and diversify their spending and grow the local healthcare workforce.

“After nearly two years of recovery from a pandemic that has hit vulnerable populations the hardest, we must continue to address the challenges communities across New York State are facing: food and housing insecurity, lack of access to basic healthcare including vaccines, lack of equity within the healthcare professions, and racial and economic healthcare disparities made worse during COVID-19. We must continue to support the full range of services that make for healthy people and communities,” said Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, Chief Executive Officer of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.

This year, BCC will leverage the $300,000 grant to expedite the Brooklyn Health Enterprise Hub by developing local capacity to meet health services procurement needs among businesses that are owned and staffed by Brooklynites. Additionally, BCC will use the funds to continue identifying and meeting the workforce needs of Brooklyn’s health organizations, resulting in higher-paying jobs and opportunities to build wealth through ownership.
