NYC Land-Based Healing Project

November 13 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

How do NYC community farms and gardens connect to well-being among Black youth, youth of Color, and mentors of Color who steward these spaces?

The NYC Land-Based Healing Project has produced an intergenerational oral history series that reveals the vital role of urban land stewardship in protecting against the impacts of historic and persistent racism and promoting collective well-being.

Join this public presentation to explore original research findings, including how land-based healing is cultivated through connections to land, neighborhood, ancestral wisdom, intergenerational cultural knowledge, spirituality, and farming practices

Moderated by Dr. Anna Ortega-Williams, Principal Investigator and Academy Innovation Resident, and Vanessa Nisperos, Academy Associate Program Director, the event invites you to:

  • Discover a community-generated definition of land-based healing in NYC and its applications.
  • Hear from members of the community research team, 7 stewards of urban farms and gardens across NYC.

Watch a short film-in-progress about La Finca del Sur, a 16-year-old farm with deep cultural roots in the South Bronx, followed by a discussion with steward Nancy Ortiz and award-winning filmmaker Andrea Ortega-Williams.
